Texured Spray Paint test

Rustoleum Access PaintAfter seeing the new “Rough” paint that Gamesworkshop is hawking, I thought….. “There must be other options”.

You can get brush on paints with sand mixed in that provides a textured finish but spray paint which is good enough for miniatures is a little different. Walking through Wal-Mart the other day (My wife made me go… honest), I saw some Stone Creations paint from Rust-Oleum.

I bought the darkest one (N7991Black Granite) knowing that it would only act as the base coat. I’d have to put a coating of straight black spray over it.

I collected a bunch of Ruins from Fantascene. I felt that some of them were too smooth anyway for ruins. These would be my test pieces.

I got them ready then stone coated them. Once dry, I black coated them. I’m actually quite pleased with the results and have taken shots of the whole process. I’ll be posting them with a complete write up after I write up my Blacksmith Shop How-to.

Fantascene Hobbit Hole

hobbit hole

Recently, I received an email from a company in England asking for a link exchange. Ever the curious soul, I checked it out. I was greeted with a very good looking “hobbit hole”. I’m a HUGE LoTR fan and have way more models than my wife thinks any normal (or abnormal) person should have. I checked out the site: Fantascene and emailed the owner (Geoff) back.

Link exchanges are easy enough and our site allows registered users to submit links on their own but I thought that this needed special treatment. In corresponding with Geoff we struck up a rapport, I created a banner ad (you did know we create graphics for people didn’t you?) and gave him a rotating banner ad. Geoff shipped me off a Hobbit Hole and a sample of their resin terrain for review. I’m saving the resin stuff for a separate article.

“The best-laid plans o’ mice an’ men…

… Gang aft a-gley,
An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain
For promised joy.”

After suffering a major melt down recently and reloading my system from backups (you do make backups don’t you?), I kept having weird problems with my system. I finally made the decision to blow away the laptop and rebuild it from scratch. I manually reloaded all my applications and slowly put my data back online.

Backups are a wonderful thing but they aren’t fool proof.

Needless to say, all this messing around has blown any plans that I had for TerrainMonster or Dungeon Crawlers into the middle of next month. I will be working on them as time allows. Big changes coming for both.

Got a little head

Fantascene Head I just got a new piece of terrain from Geoff at Fantascene. It was well packed as usual. Upon opening the package, my youngest “claimed” it for herself.

I wasn’t worried as the terrain is a single piece cast along the lines of the Hobbit Hole reviewed on Dungeon Crawlers recently.

Besides, I stole it back when she fell asleep.

It’s a perfect compliment to my LoTR games and since it doesn’t really have a scale, it’s more than usable for other games even at larger scale.

Fantascene sells terrain both finished and unfinished. I think Geoff’s skills at finishing make the ready to play stuff well worth it (besides… I’m pretty lazy)

WIP: Blacksmith Shop

Almost DoneAs time permits, I’ve been working on a resin Blacksmith shop from a local manufacturer of Miniature Wargaming Terrain: Cellar Dweller

Only detailing is left. Actually, I lie… I need to do the roof still. Since I based the structure, I have to figure out a way to strengthen the two halves of the roof so that I can lift it off. That will give me access to the inside for placing minis.

Once I finish the piece, I’ll upload all the pics to a gallery on Dungeon Crawlers and write up a how-to article on building and painting it.

Just getting started

Just a simple post to test things out. The real purpose of this site is a container for a book project. Everything will happen behind the scenes so the front page will not change often until there is actually something for public consumption.

Please note that not everything (links, etc.) will work right away.

Styrene Jail Cell – With working door

Styrene Jail Cell

I have a confession to make. I LOVE Styrene. There, I said it. Please don’t think less of me.

I’m just a hack when it comes to working with this stuff. I don’t have the best tools and I certainly don’t worry about scale. I build for look and functionality.

List of materials and tools is simple: Different shapes of styrene (described in the article), plastic glue, side cutters, ruler, pin vice (hand drill), razor saw & miter box.
